Theres a few things you can do to take the edge off them and things i would be doing my bike if I were keeping it I ve got a 05 YZ250 the thing is fricking lethal, first thing is a flywheel weight the better ones are called steely and are available through ballards the second which also helps for out on the road is over gearing the bike by adding a tooth or 2 on the rear. They still retain the power but they dont have you wanting to take a break in the first 5mins cause its trying to rip your arms off.
The best thing is with a flywheel weight it gives you heaps of torque off the bottom to drive up hill climbs.
Your spot on about rebuild costs a four stroke will get rebuilt half as much but cost you at least 3 times the amount and you can pretty much forget rebuild the barstard yourself.
Its really got to do with your riding ability you know like I know now I would rather be on something less savage than the 250 as its crazy and probably too much bike for me but a 450f I would relish as it so much more controlable but end of the day I would be probably quickest through the bush on a KTM200exc cause it suits my style from riding old 125's, it would also be a good option for you if you feel the 300 might be too much that or the 250.
They are all good bikes in the ktm enduro range i would love to get one if i did get another bike but would suffer on any commuting I would be doing on it.
