Like I said easiest to get someone to help you unless you have really long arms, just check to see whether everything is moving correctly and engaging the gears. Its just a few levers but because they are so long there is a lot of lost movement and bushes at either end are usually quite useless after a lot of kms. You'll probably find the linkage is moving but not far enough to engage the gear or something along those lines.
