the reason I ask, is that I just realised that you would have pushrod guides, so you'd need longer pushrods to allow for the higher rocker height.
the pushrods in the 179 were the correct length for the head/rocker/guide plate assembly, perhaps?
or am I on the wrong track, altogether?

Wabbit, i think you may be on the right track.
Not knowing the history of the engine, there is a good chance the previos owner/builder had a machined head and HYD lifters, allowing them to use the shorter p/rods. Will follow up that one today.
